A Look Back at the Educator’s STEAM Summit on AI Education

The conversation around Artificial Intelligence in education is no longer optional, it’s essential. Recently, CODE313, in partnership with the AI Education Project (aiEDU), Broadcom Foundation, and TIES, hosted the Educator’s STEAM Summit on AI Education at Huntington Place in Detroit. This full-day experience brought together nearly 300 educators, administrators, nonprofit leaders, and workforce stakeholders from across the Metro Detroit area, all with a shared goal: to move AI in education from awareness to action.

A Space Built for Leadership and Collaboration

From the moment attendees arrived, the energy was intentional. This wasn’t just another conference, it was a working session for the future of education.

Educators from K–12 systems, higher education, and workforce development spaces came together to:

Learning in Motion 2026 STEAM SLAM Our Biggest Success Yet:

A High-Energy, Citywide Experience Bringing STEAM to Life

CODE313’s 2026 STEAM SLAM was nothing short of extraordinary. What started as a vision to create an engaging, hands-on tech experience for students across Detroit turned into one of our largest and most impactful events to date.

In partnership with the Science & Engineering Fair, this two-day experience took place at Huntington Place, bringing together innovation, exploration, and hands-on learning at scale. Designed for youth of all ages to Imagine, Discover, and Explore, the event featured interactive science fair activations, workshops, and immersive tech experiences that sparked curiosity and creativity across every space.

Over the course of two days, we welcomed 5,337 attendees on Thursday, March 19th and 2,286 on Friday, March 20th, bringing us close to 8,000 participants. Students, educators, families, and community members filled the space with energy, curiosity, and excitement, all coming together to explore the endless possibilities within STEAM.

This wasn’t just an event, it was a movement in action.

A City Powered by Collaboration

One of the defining elements of this year’s STEAM SLAM was the incredible lineup of partners and vendors who helped create a dynamic, multi-layered experience for students.

With over 20+ engaging workshops and activations, participants had the opportunity to interact with industry professionals, educators, and innovators across a wide range of STEAM fields.

LIFT – introducing advanced manufacturing and career pathways in industry and technology
Funding Monday – empowering students with financial literacy and entrepreneurship knowledge
Girl Scouts Mobile Unit – providing hands-on activities and leadership-based learning experiences

Handz Down Mobile Gaming – delivering an immersive gaming truck experience
First Flight Drones – offering real-world drone flight experiences and career exposure
MSU 4-H Extension & Wayne State University – connecting students to higher education pathways and hands-on STEM learning

Star Factory – introducing scholars to music production and creative tech
Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) – Detroit Professionals – providing mentorship and insight into engineering careers
Raspberry Pi Foundation – supporting accessible computing and coding education for young learners
Kid Chemist – bringing science to life through engaging, hands-on experiments
Journi – exposing students to innovative learning and career exploration tools
IT Figures – highlighting pathways in information technology and digital careers

Each partner brought a unique layer of exposure, helping students see not just what STEAM is but what it can become for them.

CODE313 Zones: Where Innovation Came to Life

Alongside our partners, CODE313 created immersive, hands-on zones designed to keep students actively engaged and learning through doing.

These included:

Drone Flight Stations – where students piloted drones and explored flight mechanics
Drone Basketball Challenges – combining fun and skill-building in a competitive format
Robotics & Robot Booster Stations – giving scholars the chance to build, test, and interact with robotics systems
Virtual Reality Experiences – transporting students into new digital worlds through immersive tech
Esports Gaming Areas – connecting students to the growing world of competitive gaming and digital strategy

Each space was intentionally designed to remove barriers to entry and encourage exploration, creativity, and confidence.

An Experience That Reached Beyond the Moment

What made this year’s STEAM SLAM so powerful wasn’t just the number of attendees, it was the depth of engagement.

Students weren’t just observing, they were:

Building, Coding, Flying, Designing, Competing, Creating

For many, this was their first time interacting with this level of technology. For others, it sparked a deeper interest in pathways they hadn’t previously considered.

The energy in the room was undeniable and the impact will extend far beyond these two days.

Events of this scale don’t happen without collaboration, commitment, and a shared belief in what’s possible for our students. To every partner, vendor, volunteer, and supporter, thank you. Your presence, flexibility, and dedication helped us create something truly meaningful.

Let’s Talk About It Tuesday: How One 9-Year-Old Is Changing Literacy Through Popcorn and Books

In today’s Let’s Talk About It Tuesday, we’re highlighting a powerful story of youth leadership, literacy, and purpose. What started as a concern about third-grade reading levels has grown into a nonprofit impacting hundreds of families and thousands of children’s books distributed around the world. This is the story of Popcorn and Books.

Where It All Began

The inspiration behind Popcorn and Books started with a newsletter. It stated that if third graders were not reading on grade level, they would be required to repeat the third grade. That statistic sparked curiosity and concern.

Karter began researching the issue and discovered two major contributing factors:

A lack of books in the home
Not having someone to read with

Instead of simply acknowledging the problem, he decided to become part of the solution.

A Vision at Just 9 Years Old

Karter is now 14 years old, but he launched Popcorn and Books when he was just 9. What makes this story even more powerful is that his mission wasn’t driven by obligation, it was driven by love.

As an avid reader who began reading at the age of 2, Karter understood firsthand how transformative books could be. He wanted other children to experience that same joy and opportunity.

The Mission Behind Popcorn and Books

Popcorn and Books is a literacy company dedicated to encouraging kids to read more and most importantly, to enjoy reading. Through the “Build A Kid’s Library” program, the organization sends high-quality, age-appropriate books to children ages 5–10 in Detroit, Michigan and surrounding areas once a month at no cost to families. But the mission goes beyond just sending books.

To address the second issue, not having someone to read with, Karter created “The Build Your Kid’s Library” reading show. Through this platform, he reads books aloud, highlights great additions to children’s home libraries, and shows kids that reading can be fun, exciting, and empowering.

How the Program Works

Families register for the Popcorn and Books program. Once enrolled, children receive books each month to help grow their personal home library. Funding is raised through community donations, partnerships, and collaborations with self-published children’s authors who want their stories placed directly into the hands of young readers. Each month, books are packaged and mailed directly to families. For many children, it becomes a moment of excitement, running to the mailbox to receive “happy mail” filled with new stories waiting to be explored.

The Impact So Far

Popcorn and Books has served over 150 families and donated more than 4,000 books, including 250 books sent to Ghana. What began as a response to a newsletter has grown into a movement that crosses neighborhoods and even borders.

A TEDx Moment That Changed Everything

One of the most meaningful milestones came when Karter launched the nonprofit on a TEDx stage at just 10 years old. Standing in front of a large audience to present the mission was powerful, but the impact that followed was even greater. Because of that opportunity, the organization raised enough funding to provide books to 75 children every single month. That moment proved something important: when young voices are given a platform, real change can follow.

Lessons Learned Along the Way

Like many small nonprofits, Popcorn and Books has faced challenges, especially wearing many hats. From organizing book orders and coordinating deliveries to managing social media, fundraising, and communicating with families, the work requires resilience. Through it all, the journey has taught valuable lessons in time management, leadership, systems-building, and perseverance.

How It’s Changed Karter

Starting a nonprofit has expanded Karter’s exposure to different genres and authors, deepening his love for reading. It has also helped him develop practical business skills, public speaking, leadership, fundraising, and responsibility. More importantly, it has shown him that his voice has power and that he can use it to create meaningful impact.

Looking Ahead

The future vision for Popcorn and Books is rooted in community. The goal is to reach more local families, build partnerships with schools and neighborhood organizations, and host hands-on literacy events that bring parents and children together around books. Long term, the dream is to build a strong village of supporters who believe every child deserves access to books, and the opportunity to fall in love with reading.

Because reading builds confidence.

Being part of the Detroit Auto Show is more than an appearance, it’s an honor. As one of the only nonprofit organizations invited to participate, CODE313 had the unique opportunity to bring STEAM learning into one of the most iconic automotive events in the world. With a booth located upstairs and an even larger interactive presence on the lower level, we were able to reach thousands of students, families, and adults, transforming curiosity into hands-on learning in real time.

A Legendary Event Meets STEAM Education

The Detroit Auto Show is known for innovation, design, and the future of mobility and this year, it also became a space for immersive learning. From the moment doors opened, our booths were buzzing with excitement. Children, teens, parents, and automotive enthusiasts stopped by eager to explore how technology, engineering, and creativity come together behind the vehicles we see on the road every day.

Hands-On Experiences That Put Learning in Motion

At our STEAM activations, participants didn’t just observe, they stepped into the experience:

Virtual Reality Auto eXperience: Through VR, students and adults entered realistic automotive simulations where they could change tires, inspect engines, and step into the role of a car mechanic. Experiencing automotive technology in a virtual environment helped break down complex concepts in an exciting, approachable way. Real-World Automotive Exploration: By connecting VR to real-life automotive processes, participants gained a deeper understanding of how cars function, how technology supports safety and performance, and how STEAM careers show up in the auto industry.

All-Ages Engagement: While kids were instantly captivated, adults were just as intrigued, asking questions, trying the simulations themselves, and sharing stories about their own connections to Detroit’s automotive legacy. Throughout the event, one thing was clear: learning doesn’t have an age limit. Curiosity was on full display across generations.

The CODE313 x Star Factory S.T.E.A.M. SLAM School Tour made an exciting stop at George Crockett Academy, bringing a full-scale, immersive STEAM e X perience to approximately 300 students. For one unforgettable day, students stepped into a world of technology, creativity, and hands-on discovery, and their excitement said it all. From the moment the activations began, scholars were fully engaged, eager to explore every station and learn how technology works beyond the screen.

A High-Energy STEAM e X perience

George Crockett Academy was transformed into a vibrant STEAM environment where students rotated through CODE313’s signature activations. Each e X perience was designed to be interactive, approachable, and inspiring, giving scholars the opportunity to try new technologies, ask questions, and imagine what’s possible. The energy throughout the day was contagious, with students cheering each other on, sharing discoveries, and proudly showing off what they learned.

Hands-On Activations That Sparked Big Questions

Students e X perienced the full lineup of S.T.E.A.M. SLAM activities:

Virtual Reality (VR):
Scholars explored immersive digital worlds and simulations, many e X periencing VR for the first time. The excitement quickly turned into curiosity about how VR is built and how they could access it themselves.
Augmented Reality (AR) & Merge Cubes:
Using AR tools and Merge Cubes, students interacted with 3D digital objects in real time, blending physical and digital learning in a way that felt like magic. This station sparked nonstop questions and creativity.
Drone Flight & Simulation:
Students practiced navigating drones through simulated environments, learning the basics of flight, control, and problem-solving.
Blaze Pods Reaction Challenges:
Fast-paced, movement-based challenges kept students energized while demonstrating how technology connects to performance, data, and reaction time.
Box Stacking Competition:
A team-based engineering challenge that encouraged collaboration, balance, and creative problem-solving, with plenty of excitement and friendly competition.

Throughout the day, students were interviewed about their e X periences, eagerly sharing what they enjoyed most and what surprised them. Many asked questions like:

“How can I get a VR headset?”
“Where can I get Merge Cubes?”
“How can I learn to do this at home?”

Those questions are the spark we aim for.

Inspiration That Extends Beyond the Day

By the end of the experience, students left excited, confident, and inspired, with a new understanding that technology isn’t just something they consume, but something they can explore, learn, and create. From Scholars to Leaders

At CODE313, impact is more than a moment. It’s more than a workshop, a field trip, or a one-day experience. Impact is what happens years later, when a scholar becomes a leader, when curiosity turns into confidence, and when access turns into a career. This is the heart of why we do what we do. And the stories of Joevell Arnold, Davontay Delacerda, and Noah Rivers are living proof.

Joevell Arnold: From Scholar to Lead Instructor

Joevell Arnold, now a CODE313 S.T.E.A.M. Engineer Instructor & Lead Instructor, began his journey at just 16 years old, with a natural gift for coding was discovered in the computer lab at West Side Academy in Detroit. With the encouragement of his teacher, Judi Dent, who led the school’s TEALS Program, Joevell’s talent was nurtured early and it changed everything. He graduated early from high school, went on to complete multiple internships with Microsoft, and quickly realized that technology wasn’t just something he was good at, it was his future. Today, at just 23, he is a Lead Instructor and supervisor, mentoring the same age group he once stood in. His growth reflects exactly what happens when talent meets opportunity and when a young person is surrounded by people who believe in them early.

Davontay Delacerda: Commitment, Consistency, and Flight

Davontay Delacerda entered CODE313’s Youth Part 107 Drone Program at 17 years old, alongside many other scholars. But as the program progressed, something stood out. Session after session, Davontay kept showing up. At just 17 years old, he successfully passed his FAA Part 107 Certification, an achievement many adults work years toward. From there, Davontay became a professional drone pilot, working with CODE313 and other companies such as Aerial Loop, getting paid to do what he loves and has worked so hard for. Now, he’s building toward launching his own drone company, with a future that continues to expand upward, just like the technology he pilots.

Noah Rivers: Growing With the Mission

Noah Rivers joined CODE313 through a partnered program with The Yunion at just 15 years old. What started as an opportunity to learn quickly became a pathway to purpose. Now 19, Noah is an Assistant Instructor at CODE313, working in our office every day, strengthening his engineering, technology, and leadership skills while continuing to grow in the field he plans to stay in long-term. Noah’s story represents consistency, trust, and growth and what happens when young people are given space not just to learn, but to belong.

This Is Why We Do What We Do

These three young men didn’t just pass through CODE313.

They stayed .

They grew .

They built careers.

Their journeys started years apart, but all began with one thing in common: early access to STEAM education in an environment that believed in them.

At CODE313, we know that:

The CODE313 x Star Factory S.T.E.A.M. SLAM School Tour brought high-energy STEAM learning to Morse Elementary School, engaging more than 300 students in a full day of interactive, hands-on technology experiences designed to inspire curiosity at an early age. For many of the scholars, this was their first time engaging with technologies like virtual reality, augmented reality, and drone simulation and the excitement was instant.

Turning the School Into a STEAM Playground

Morse Elementary transformed into a vibrant learning environment as students rotated through CODE313’s signature STEAM activations. Each station was designed to be age-appropriate, fun, and accessible, allowing students to learn by doing, exploring, and experimenting.

Laughter, focus, and curiosity filled the space as students tried new challenges and celebrated their wins together.

CODE313 and Star Factory brought the S.T.E.A.M. SLAM School Tour to Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School, delivering a full-scale, immersive STEAM experience to more than 300 students. For one powerful day, the school transformed into a high-energy innovation space where creativity, technology, and hands-on learning collided.

From the moment students walked in, the excitement was undeniable, curiosity, laughter, and discovery filled every corner of the space.

A Full Activation Designed to Engage and Inspire

Students rotated through CODE313’s signature tech activations, each one designed to introduce real-world skills in an accessible, exciting way:

Virtual Reality (VR):
Immersive simulations that exposed students to how VR is used across industries like gaming, engineering, healthcare, and aviation.

Augmented Reality (AR):
Creative stations where students explored AR design and learned how digital overlays are used in social media, marketing, and digital storytelling.

Drone Flight & Simulation:
Hands-on drone experiences that connected students to careers in aviation, robotics, and emerging tech fields.

Blaze Pods Reaction Training:
High-energy reaction challenges blending physical movement with data-driven technology, a crowd favorite that kept students engaged and energized .

A Courtside Lesson in Innovation

Every year, Motor City Cruise Education Day brings together thousands of young learners for a powerful combination of sports, inspiration, and hands-on learning. This year, the event reached new heights as more than 2,000 students from across the Detroit metro area filled the arena, ready to cheer on the Wayne State basketball team and ready to explore new horizons in technology. But the game wasn’t the only highlight of the day.
For many of these scholars, their most memorable moment happened before tip-off the moment they stepped into the world of CODE313.

Bringing Technology to Life Through Experiential Learning

As students entered the arena, they were greeted with an opportunity to dive into immersive tech experiences that blended education with excitement. CODE313’s activation gave scholars direct exposure to Augmented Reality, using Merge Cubes to unlock digital worlds right in the palm of their hands.

With each rotation of the cube, students watched 3D objects appear, transform, and interact, a heart, a galaxy, a fossil, a machine. For many, this was their very first time seeing AR outside of a phone screen or gaming app. What began as simple curiosity quickly turned into wonder.

A Day Filled With Discovery

Throughout the event, students moved through CODE313’s learning stations, testing different AR realities and exploring hands-on simulations designed to spark their creativity and problem-solving skills. Teachers reported that many of their students couldn’t stop talking about the Merge Cube experience, even as the game was happening.

Some scholars lined up again just to test more simulations.

“Is this something I can get at home?”
“Where can I tell my parents to buy this?”
“Can we use this at school?”

Inspiring the Next Generation of Game Creators

Following the success of its main conference, Xbox Game Camp partnered with CODE313 to expand its impact with the return of its interactive “Arcade” format hands-on version of the program designed specifically for young, aspiring creators.

What Is Xbox Game Camp Arcade?

Xbox Game Camp Arcade is a youth-focused extension of Xbox Game Camp, created to spark interest in technology, creativity, and game development. The goal is simple: make the world of gaming accessible, exciting, and achievable for students who may have never considered careers in tech. By giving young people early exposure to coding, design, and creative problem-solving, the Arcade series helps them see themselves as future innovators, developers, and digital creators.

Detroit Hosts the 2025 Arcade Event

On October 17, 2025, Xbox Game Camp Arcade and CODE313 arrived at the Hall of Legends inside Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan. The event was presented in partnership with Microsoft MakeCode, CODE313, and the Detroit Lions/Detroit Lions Academy.

More than 100 students from Southeastern High School and Detroit Lions Academy were invited to spend a day learning about game creation and exploring potential tech career pathways.

A Full-Circle Moment: Jovell Arnold’s Story

One of the day’s featured speakers, Jovell Arnold, demonstrated firsthand the power of early exposure to tech. As a former participant in a CODE313 program, Jovell sat in the same type of chairs as the students attending the event, before discovering his passion for coding.

That passion led him to join CODE313 professionally, where he now trains students just like his younger self.

“I always wanted to give the kind of mentorship I received,” Jovell shared.
“Through CODE313, we’re preparing Detroit’s next generation of coders. We’re proud to work alongside Microsoft MakeCode, Xbox Game Camp, and the Detroit Lions to strengthen our community’s tech skills.”

His story showed students that their futures can begin with a single opportunity.

Building Games, Meeting Mascots, and Hands-On Learning

Students spent the day creating their own 8-bit football video games, inspired by Microsoft MakeCode’s official NFL game creation tools. They explored game logic, sound design, character movement, and coding fundamentals, turning ideas into playable games in real time. Special guest Roary the Lion, the Detroit Lions mascot, attended the event to hype up the students, take photos, and join in on the fun.

From a One-Day Event to a Nationwide Program

The success of the Arcade events, first in Atlanta (2023) and now Detroit (2025)—has sparked a much larger vision.Xbox Game Camp is now working closely with Microsoft MakeCode, the Detroit Lions, and CODE313 to design a “Game Camp in a Box” curriculum. This packaged program would allow schools across the country to run game development workshops as after-school or extracurricular programs. The goal is to equip public middle and high schools with everything they need to bring hands-on gaming education directly to their students.

Impact, Growth, and What’s Next

Xbox Game Camp CODE313 Detroit highlighted Detroit’s expanding gaming and tech ecosystem, reinforcing Michigan’s position as an emerging leader in interactive entertainment.

As the three-month Game Camp program wrapped up, students walked away with:

and a clearer vision of what a future career in tech could look like

The Arcade event helped plant the seeds of curiosity and for many students, opened the door to possibilities they had never considered before. To make the day even more unforgettable, a local Detroit artist joined the tour, delivering a dynamic live performance that tied creativity and technology together. The energy in the gym was unmatched students were dancing, cheering, and fully immersed in the moment.

CODE313 had the incredible honor of welcoming 17 scholars, 6 chaperones, and 4 interpreters from the Michigan School for the Deaf for a fully immersive STEAM field trip experience. This visit was more than a workshop, it was a powerful reminder of how accessible, inclusive technology can be when learning is designed with intention and care.

From coding to augmented reality design, scholars explored, created, and discovered new possibilities in a space built to ensure that every student could participate fully.

An Experience That Expanded Everyone’s Horizons

What made this field trip truly special was the way every scholar, educator, and interpreter was able to engage deeply with each activity. Communication flowed seamlessly, and the hands-on nature of STEAM learning created an environment where students could express their creativity and problem-solving skills without barriers. Watching scholars confidently dive into new tools, many for the very first time, showed that technology isn’t just universal, it’s a bridge that allows every learner to shine.

Classroom 1: Augmented Reality (AR) — Creating Custom Face Filters

One of the biggest highlights was the augmented reality session, where scholars learned how to build their own social-media–style face filters.

SLAM School Tour made one of its biggest and most energetic stops yet at Brownstown Middle School, where we welcomed over 300 scholars for a full day of hands-on tech immersion, innovation, and inspiration. From the moment students entered the gym, the excitement was electric. With VR headsets running, drones taking flight in our simulators, and interactive challenges buzzing around the room, the entire space transformed into an unforgettable tech experience that kept scholars engaged from start to finish.

A Full-School Tech Takeover Like No Other

Our signature S.T.E.A.M. SLAM setup brought Brownstown’s students into the world of emerging technologies through stations designed to spark curiosity, creativity, and confidence.Each activation showcased a different pathway within STEAM fields, giving students a chance to explore careers, test new skills, and discover passions they didn’t know they had.

The performance added a cultural and creative layer to the learning experience, showing students that technology and the arts often collide in powerful ways.

A New Wave of Students Excited About Tech Careers

One of the biggest highlights of the day? Hearing students share their excitement about exploring tech fields in the future. Throughout the event, we heard things like:

CODE313 brought an unforgettable, high-impact S.T.E.A.M. SLAM experience to Cass Technical High School, transforming the campus into a hub of innovation, creativity, and future-focused exploration. With nearly 600 scholars participating throughout the day, the building was alive with excitement, movement, and meaningful engagement from start to finish.

Students rotated through two core experiences, the STEM Innovation Zone and the Performing Arts & Creativity Zone, ensuring that every scholar had a chance to discover something new, unlock new interests, and imagine themselves in spaces they may have never envisioned before.

STEM Innovation Zone

In the STEM zone, approximately 300 Cass Tech scholars immersed themselves in hands-on learning that pushed the limits of imagination and introduced them to real-world pathways in emerging technology.

Virtual Reality Career Exploration

VR headsets transported students into environments they’ve only heard about, operating rooms, engineering labs, aviation cockpits, manufacturing facilities, and more. Scholars weren’t just watching careers; they were experiencing them. Many walked away saying, “I didn’t know this existed,” or, “This makes me want to try this in real life.”

Augmented Reality & Drone Simulation

Students tested their precision and creativity as they flew drones in simulated airspaces and interacted with AR scenes that blended digital and physical worlds. These stations helped scholars understand how technology is used in aviation, engineering, design, and problem-solving industries.

Blaze Pods Reaction Training

The Blaze Pods station brought energy, speed, and competition. Students challenged each other in reaction-time drills that not only encouraged focus and coordination but also showed how technology is used in sports science and human performance careers.

Engineering Games & Box Stacking Challenges

From structural design to teamwork-based competitions, students put their engineering instincts to the test. These challenges emphasized collaboration, planning, and perseverance, all essential skills for future innovators. Throughout the zone, scholars repeatedly said how much they learned and how these tools opened their minds to possibilities they never considered before.

Performing Arts & Creativity Zone

Meanwhile, another 300 students experienced the creative side of the S.T.E.A.M. SLAM Tour, highlighting how art and technology come together to inspire expression and storytelling.

Live Artist Performance

Students gathered for a high-energy, message-driven performance that blended music, storytelling, and motivational themes. The performance wasn’t just entertainment; it was connection. Scholars were engaged, laughing, singing along, and absorbing the powerful message behind the art.

Digital Expression & Creative Media

Students witnessed how performance, content creation, media, and technology intersect to create careers in digital arts. From visual creativity to understanding how media impacts culture, this experience left many scholars feeling inspired to explore their own artistic talents. The CODE313 S.T.E.A.M. SLAM School Tour made an exciting stop at Bow Elementary-Middle School, where we transformed their gym into a dynamic, tech-powered experience designed to engage, inspire, and challenge students in the best possible way.

With our full lineup of interactive stations from VR to drone simulation, students were given the chance to step into the world of STEAM careers through hands-on discovery and immersive learning. More than 150 scholars participated in the experience, each one walking away with a new sense of curiosity and confidence.

A Full Gym Takeover With High-Energy Learning

From the moment the first group walked in, the energy was unmatched. We turned Bow’s gym into a buzzing hub of exploration, with stations that encouraged creativity, problem-solving, teamwork, and curiosity.

Students moved freely between each experience, challenging themselves, competing with friends, and learning skills connected to real-world tech pathways.

Immersive Tech Stations That Bring STEAM to Life

Each activation was designed to give scholars a meaningful, memorable intro to emerging technologies:

A Day of Discovery Through Coding, Creativity, and Emerging Technology

CODE313 welcomed 50 enthusiastic scholars from Faxon Academy for an immersive STEAM Field Trip e X perience, a hands-on day designed to spark imagination, build confidence, and introduce students to the world of creation through technology. From game development to augmented reality design, scholars spent the day exploring tools that are shaping the future, all while discovering that they have the power to shape it too.

A Full Day of Creativity and Tech Exploration

The moment scholars walked into our space, their curiosity kicked in. They were ready to create, explore, and challenge themselves and we were ready to guide them through it.

To keep the energy high and the learning impactful, we split scholars into two groups, allowing them to rotate between two interactive tech classrooms. Each classroom focused on a different digital skillset, giving students a well-rounded, hands-on introduction to STEAM careers.

Classroom 1: Game Development & Coding with MakeCode Arcade

In our game development room, scholars learned the fundamentals of coding and game design using Microsoft MakeCode Arcade. This beginner-friendly platform allowed them to:

Build game characters
Design obstacles and worlds
Program movement, scoring, and reactions
Play-test their own creations

For many Faxon Academy scholars, this was their first time coding anything...and watching them go from unsure to confidently building their own games was powerful.

The room was filled with laughter, focus, and those classic “wait… I MADE that?!” moments that make teaching STEAM so rewarding.

Classroom 2: Augmented Reality & Digital Creativity

In the second classroom, students explored Augmented Reality (AR) the same technology behind social media filters and interactive digital art.

Using beginner-friendly AR tools, scholars created their own filters, experimenting with:

Digital layering
Face-tracking features
Color effects
Creative design choices

This station blended imagination with tech in a way that felt fun, expressive, and empowering. Many students said they’d never realized they could create something they usually only see online.

By the end of the session, scholars left with a new perspective on digital creativity and the real-world applications of AR in entertainment, design, communication, and marketing.

Impact That Extends Beyond the Field Trip

The goal of our STEAM Field Trip e X periences is simple:

Expose students to tech early, show them what’s possible, and help them envision futures they may have never considered.

More than 150 students cycled through a series of interactive experiences designed to introduce them to the endless possibilities within the world of technology. From virtual reality adventures to drone simulation challenges, the day was packed with learning, discovery, and unforgettable “aha” moments.

A Gym Turned Innovation Arena

For this stop on our S.T.E.A.M. SLAM tour, we set up multiple stations that allowed students to jump in, explore, compete, and create. The gym quickly filled with curiosity and excitement as scholars moved from experience to experience, each one offering a different window into tech careers and the skills behind them.

Students had the chance to rotate through CODE313’s most engaging and in-demand demonstrations:

We recently had the incredible opportunity to welcome 50 bright scholars from the Academy of Warren for an immersive S.T.E.A.M Field Trip e X perience, a full day designed to ignite curiosity, creativity, and confidence through hands-on learning.

For quite some time now, CODE313 has partnered with Academy of Warren through after-school programming, helping students explore technology in fun, meaningful ways. This time, we invited them to take their learning to the next level, right here in our innovation space.

Coding Meets Creativity: Game Development in Action

Half of the scholars stepped into Classroom 1, where they dove headfirst into game development using Microsoft MakeCode Arcade . Guided by our instructors, students learned to build their own playable games from scratch, coding characters, designing levels, and bringing their ideas to life on screen.

As the room filled with energy and collaboration, scholars began to see coding not just as lines of logic but as a tool for storytelling and creative expression. For many, this was their first introduction to programming, and it was inspiring to watch their confidence grow with each new challenge they conquered.

For the second year in a row, CODE313 had the honor of participating in the Tuskegee Airmen Flight Academy’s Aviation & STEM Career Day, held at the historic Tuskegee Airmen National Museum. This two-day event brought together hundreds of middle and high school students for an unforgettable journey through aviation, science, technology, and innovation.

This year’s event welcomed a total of over 1,000 scholars, 723 middle school students on October 28 and 350 high school students on October 29 from across Metro Detroit. The experience was designed to open young minds to the exciting and limitless possibilities that come with careers in STEM and aviation.

Bringing Immersive Technology to New Heights

As a returning vendor, CODE313 proudly showcased the power of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), introducing scholars to interactive, hands-on tech experiences that blend creativity and innovation.

Students stepped into a new world of immersive learning, where they could explore simulations, interact with digital environments, and see first-hand how technology is shaping industries, including aviation. Many scholars experienced VR for the first time, sparking an incredible sense of curiosity and excitement.

“I’m going to ask my parents to get me a VR headset!” one student exclaimed after trying out the experience, a perfect reminder of why we do what we do.

Collaborating with Leaders Across Industries

The event featured an impressive lineup of partners and exhibitors who share a passion for education and innovation. Organizations such as Delta Airlines, United Airlines, American Airlines, the Detroit Police Department (Air Support Unit), Focus: HOPE, the Michigan Science Center, DAPCEP, Eastern Michigan University, and many others came together to inspire and empower Detroit’s youth.

From drone demonstrations and flight simulators to engineering and design showcases, every booth offered a window into the possibilities within STEM careers and CODE313 was proud to stand among them, bringing our tech-forward approach to learning.

Inspiration That Takes Flight

At CODE313, our mission has always been to expand access to STEAM education and help students see themselves as creators and innovators. Participating in the Tuskegee Airmen Flight Academy’s Aviation & STEM Career Day perfectly aligns with that mission, allowing us to meet students where they are and give them the tools to imagine who they can become.

Seeing students light up as they explored VR and AR reminded us that exposure changes everything. When young people are given the chance to engage with technology hands-on, they start to envision their place in it, as coders, pilots, engineers, designers, or entrepreneurs.

Looking Ahead

We’re incredibly grateful to the Tuskegee Airmen National Museum and all the incredible partners who made this event such a success. This year’s turnout, enthusiasm, and student engagement exceeded expectations, and we’re already looking forward to returning for our third year in 2026.

As UB Detroit Director Adam Harris puts it, “We believe these internships and job shadowing experiences will help TRIO scholars grow and develop into the professionals they desire to be. This week's blog is centered around why the Pythagorean Theorem actually works. So without further ado, let's talk about it.

The well renowned Pythagorean Theorem is a mathematical theorem that has been around since the Old Babylonian period (20th to 16th centuries BC). Math is so everlasting, this theorem has been built on ever since. You may have heard of “a squared plus b squared equals c squared” before, well that is what we now know as the Pythagorean Theorem. This theorem is only used when dealing with a geometrical right triangle. If you know the length of two sides but not the third side, you can use this theorem in order to distinguish what that missing side length is.

There are many mathematical and visual proofs that have been attained along the way. Even Einstein has had his share on this proof in his time, one uses dissection without rearrangement.

Engineer Instructor who has been a driving force in shaping the summer experience for our youth.

Hello, everyone! My name is Sal, and I'm thrilled to be one of the mentors here at CODE313 ’s summer camp. Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of guiding students through the thrilling realms of game development, Virtual Reality (VR), and Augmented Reality (AR). For me, this journey has been all about games—how they’re made, how they’re experienced, and most importantly, how they’re personalized by those who create them.

One of the highlights of my role is witnessing the incredible ways students put their own spin on the projects. I believe that education isn’t just about following a set path but about finding and solving problems through the unique perspectives of each student. That’s why I emphasize self-expression in every lesson. Rather than imposing a rigid objective, I encourage students to inject their personalities and creativity into their work. As we near the end of this summer camp, I’m excited about a special project we’re planning. "Empowering Youth Through Coding and Community Collaboration"

At CODE313 , in partnership with The Freedom School of Washtenaw County and Washtenaw My Brother's Keeper, we're thrilled to offer an enriching coding program this summer in Ypsilanti, MI.

From July 8 to August 8, Monday through Thursday, we gather at South Pointe Scholars Academy on Geddes Rd., Ypsilanti, MI. Our coding program runs from 2:30 to 5:00 pm, welcoming students eager to explore the world of technology through hands-on coding projects.

What We're Teaching: Coding Fundamentals and Life Skills

Under the guidance of Juan Linares and Cheree' Stevenson, students delve into block coding using Microsoft MakeCode Arcade . We start with coding fundamentals such as sequencing, loops, and conditional statements. These concepts not only form the foundation of game development but also cultivate essential life skills.

Sequencing teaches students the importance of planning and organization in both coding and everyday tasks. Loops help automate repetitive tasks efficiently, fostering efficiency and time management skills. Conditional statements encourage students to make decisions based on different conditions, enhancing critical thinking and decision-making abilities.

Week 1 Project - Whack the Mole!

In our first week project, Whack-a-Mole becomes an ideal introduction to game development using MakeCode Arcade. Students start by learning to program the appearance and disappearance of moles using block coding. They'll develop the mechanics for the player's mallet or cursor movement to whack the moles and implement a scoring system to track their performance. As they progress, they can adjust timers and difficulty levels through coding, gradually increasing the game's speed and challenge. This project not only teaches foundational coding skills but also introduces students to game design principles in a fun and interactive way.

Week 2 Project - Save the Dinos Game!

Moving into our second week project, Save the Dinos in MakeCode Arcade offers students a deeper dive into game development. They'll build upon their skills from the Whack-a-Mole project to program a character that navigates platforms to rescue dinosaurs. Using block coding, students will create algorithms for platform generation, design mechanics for character movement including jumping and avoiding obstacles, and construct multiple levels with escalating complexity. Through this project, students further enhance their programming abilities while exploring creative game design elements that culminate in a polished and engaging gameplay experience. These projects collectively equip students with essential skills in coding and game development, preparing them to create marketable games that showcase their creativity and technical proficiency.

How to Reduce Screen Time and Foster Real-World Connections

The CDC recommends that kids aged 11-18 limit screen time to 1-2 hours per day. With practical tips, teens and their parents can strike a balance between unplugging and engaging with their devices.

Digital devices are everywhere and fulfill many of our everyday needs, making it hard to balance unplugging from technology and engaging with it. Teens, in particular, may find it difficult to disconnect because they have always had digital technology in their lives.

Screens can be beneficial for learning and connection, but excessive use can lead to addiction and mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and social isolation. Teens often spend up to 7.5 hours daily on entertainment screens, far exceeding the CDC's 1-2 hour recommendation. This excessive time could be better spent on family, friends, hobbies, and physical activities.

On March 1, UScellular encourages families and kids to engage in real-world activities that promote mindfulness, connection, and well-being. “By intentionally taking a break, we can gain a greater appreciation for the role that tech plays in our lives and be better equipped to establish healthier tech habits,” says Laurent “LT” Therivel, President and CEO of UScellular.

Here are five effective ways to help teens unplug from technology:

Model Healthy Tech Habits.- If the household rule is “no phones at the dinner table,” it can be frustrating for teens to see their parents make excuses. Teens are more likely to disconnect if they see their parents setting a positive example. Being honest about your own tech usage and discussing the challenges of unplugging helps build mutual support.
Start with Small Steps.- Begin with just 30 minutes to an hour of screen-free time each day, ideally at the same time. Gradually increase this time after a week or set additional screen-free periods during the week.
Explore Alternative Activities.- Help teens create a list of tech-free activities they’d like to do, such as walking, doing yoga, hiking, napping, or reading. It could include trying out a new sport or hobby.

Encourage Physical Activity.- Exercise helps teens unplug from technology and counters the negative impacts of too much screen time. Encourage teens to participate in sports, yoga, or go for walks and hikes.

Finding balance starts with enjoying screenless activities, whether connecting with family and friends, being active, or exploring offline interests. Hello to whoever is reading this article, we are an esports management team known as Blue Birds who recently assisted in organizing our own esports event at the Diehl Center Boys & Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan. In this event, we managed a professional esports tournament for the youth. Our responsibilities included overseeing the participants throughout the tournaments. Before the tournament date, as a team, we had to make decisions on various factors such as the game to be played and ensuring all technology was up to date and organized.

Each member of the Blue Birds played a crucial role in ensuring everything was done accordingly. Additionally, each of our members was assigned different roles including CEO, COO, CMO, CTO, & CFO. As a collective, our team believes that the event ran smoothly from start to finish, and we couldn’t envision it being any better. The event was enjoyable for all attendees, including adults who weren’t participating. There was plenty of laughter and excitement from everyone, especially the kids.

The kids provided us with fantastic feedback about the tournament, and each of them enjoyed it fondly. However, a few had suggestions for having more games such as Roblox games. We, as a team, take these suggestions as evidence of the children's desire for us to organize another esports tournament in the future, which seems to be the case with our next project we were requested to participate in. After our event, EGL invited us to assist them with a competition, Elite Gaming Live. EGL recognized how well we managed our tournament and would love for us to help them during their upcoming esports competition.

We believe that we have a promising future in this field and hope to succeed even more!

Last month, CODE313 partnered with United Way for Southeastern Michigan's STEMpossible event at the Michigan Science Center on Thursday, October 5, 2023. At STEMpossible, over 700 fourth- and fifth-grade students students rotated through interactive STEM stations intended to boost curiosity, encourage creativity, improve social skills and sharpen critical thinking. For many students, the STEMpossible event marked their first time visiting the Michigan Science Center. Heman Bekele, a freshman at Woodson High School in Northern Virginia, spent his summer break working to cure cancer.

W.T. Woodson High School freshman Heman Bekele moved to Virginia as a four-year-old. But he never forgot where he was born: Ethiopia.

Heman, newly crowned “America’s Top Young Scientist” after winning this year’s 3M Young Scientist Challenge, says the memories of people working long hours outside under the glaring sun in Ethiopia stayed with him as he made his way through the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) school system. A graduate of Wakefield Forest Elementary School and Frost Middle School, Heman was struck by the dramatic differences in skin cancer survival rates in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa compared to places where high tech cancer treatments are available.

“Skin cancer is mostly found on people who live within developing countries,” Heman says. “But the average price for an operation is $40,000. I was devastated by the idea of people having to choose between treatment and putting food on the table for their families. There are so many preventable deaths.”

He was determined to find a better way. So Heman researched skin cancer, learning about dendritic cells, which he says help protect skin by boosting immune response. Then he spent months playing with salicylic acid, glycolic acid and tretinoin, trying to find the right combination to help treat skin cancer. He developed SCTS, which stands for skin cancer treating soap, and works by reactivating dendritic cells.

WHAT HARDWARE DO I NEED TO RUN REALITY COMPOSER?

At the time of writing, Reality Composer requires iPadOS 14.1 or later and will run on 5th generation iPads and above. For a full list of compatible devices just check the App Store.

Reality Composer will also run on iPhone 6S and above with iOS 14.1 or later. However, I would recommend using an iPad if you wish to create your own AR scenes.

Over these past few years, you may have noticed the USB-C connector coming more into play in society, after its introduction in 2014, the popularity of the connector came quickly. It has already become the connector of choice for products like keyboards, external hard drives, digital cameras, bluetooth speakers, headphones, TV's, and much more. If you are an Apple product user, you might have noticed the company started to convert to this connector for their iPad Pro back in 2018, and now is doing same with their latest iPhone 15 products. But what exactly is a USB-C, and what are the benefits of this connector compared to others?

The USB-C is a small and versatile connector for multiple devices and products, it transfers data at very high speeds, transmits video signals, and delivers power to charge devices' batteries all in one single cable. It stands for Universal Serial Bus, and the C represents the type of USB it is. The main reason this connector is beneficial and popular is because of all of its functions it does in one. This weeks blog is focusing on the science behind why our fingers get so wrinkly after being in the water for an extended period of time. Let's dive into it!

Our skin does a lot for us, it's the body's biggest organ. Some pretty cool functions of the skin include protecting us from hazardous substances, reduces the harmful effects of UV radiation, helps control the body's temperature, acts a sensory organ, and etc. But what science is behind this common mystery that makes our skin function the way it does when it's in water for a long time? The first thing you need some background knowledge on is the automatic nervous system, which is the involuntary part of how our body works, we basically don't need to consciously control some function apart of the body. Some examples of this include blinking, our eyes dilating, digestion, our hearts beating, and much more like our blood vessels. Our blood vessels automatically expand and contract based on what we eat, drink, the medications we take, and more.

Now, when our skin has been in the water for a while our blood vessels contract, which causes the skin to get wrinkly. The sweat ducts in the skin open up so that the water is allowed to flow into the the skin tissue, this added water ends up decreasing the amount of salt inside the skin, kind of like diluting it. After this happens, nerve fibers send signals to the brain letting it know about the lower salt levels, and then the automatic nervous system responds by constricting the blood vessels. The narrowing of the blood vessels makes the volume of the skin to reduce and make the skin turn into well defined wrinkle patterns.

The implantation of a microchip into a human seems very 21st century, especially with the technology that we have today. But in actuality, a microchip was first implanted into a human in the year 1998, which honestly isn't too far from the beginning of the 21st century itself. It's just now during this past decade, this technology is available commercially. And for specifically the implantable payment microchips, the company Walletmor has become the first to offer them up for sale.

The technology that is used in Walletmor's microchip is near-field communication, which is used for the contactless payment system in smartphones as well. This technology is also alike with the technology that is used for key fobs to open doors and even public transit cards. The implant is combined with a tiny microchip and an antenna that is enclosed in a protective covering called biopolymer, quite similar to plastic. The procedure technically feels like how it would be for your skin to be pinched, the chip will stay firmly in place and basically ready to use immediately once the procedure is completed, you can go on ahead with using the implant to pay for a haircut, buy some groceries, fill up your tank, and etc. You can be anywhere in the world, as long as there is an option for contactless payment, the chip is at your disposal.

This weeks blog is concentrated around Computer Science, how a new approach to teaching the subject could help expand its appeal. Let's jump right in to the topic!

In this day and age, the demand for computer science skills are continuously growing but there is still a noticeable struggle in K-12 schools trying to teach this subject to new generations. Some of the main challenges that these schools are faced with are the lack of qualified computer science teachers, lack of funds for the schools to use, and trying to fit in a new academic feature in a curriculum that may be too crowded. But this new approach called integrated computing helps tackle some of those challenges. Integrated computing teaches computer science skills like programming and computer literacy within traditional courses like math, science, language arts, and etc.

Integrated computing grants computer science education to become part of the learning in other courses, just like how a student also uses their comprehension and reading skills in subjects other than an english class. This fairly new discovery also doesn't require teachers to be an expert in computer science at all, they can use a pre-made computer science lesson in their own class.

Misty Copeland, ballet dancer and author, began her chase for ballet when she was only 13 years of age. Copeland dances for American Ballet Theatre, which is one of the three leading classical ballet companies in America. Misty became the very first African American female dancer to be promoted to the ABT’s principal dancer throughout their 75 year existence.

Code Next is a computer science education program created for minority high school students who are Black, Latinx, and/or Indigenous. Their mission is to help equip minority students with the necessary tools needed to go into an in-demand tech career field. The program provides after-school sessions as well as Saturday labs. Code Next aims to raise up the next generation of innovative tech leaders.

Google founded Code Next in 2015 and offers labs in 3 locations: New York, California, and Detroit. The lab in Detroit is located at the Michigan Central train station with Ford as their partner. The lab is also being run by Google.

In this program, students partake in curriculum learning activities, manage projects of their own, and learn from mentors/coaches. Some projects include designing and programming a robot and 3D printing an Android chess set.

A Need For Semiconductors

Currently worth $600 billion, the semiconductor industry is making its way to being worth $1 million by the year of 2030. Partnering with that, there is a longing need of skilled workers to achieve the work needed for the success of the industry. The amount of students who are currently considering a career in the semiconductor industry is scarce . For a successful industry, there is an aim for more than 500,000 to 600,000 workers within the next seven years. If that’s not a lot of people, I don’t know what is.

The U.S. government views the industry being as important as national security. Unfortunately, there’s a vast amount of college students who are not interested in engineering and there is also consideration that the costs of education is a barrier for a lot of students who want to pursue engineering. Some solutions thought of during a CHIP panel discussion was an idea of a “4+1” program. Helping students achieve their Bachelors and Masters degree within 5 years instead of 6.

Coordinators are also looking to mentor women and underserved minorities who are in the semiconductor industry. This can help to increase interest in other women and underserved minorities who would want to join the industry or get the exposure.

With a diameter nearly as wide as the width of China, the Moon is ranking top five of largest satellites in the solar system. It is actually known to be the fifth largest!

The components of the moon consist of an inner and outer core (which are rich in iron), a mantle, and a crust. As one may notice on the surface of the moon there are various dents, these dents are called craters. Craters are made when meteorites crash into the Moon.

Throughout the months we all have seen the moon in its different phases, but do we know what’s really going on? These moon phases can appear to us as if the moon is actually changing shapes but that’s not the case. Because the light from the Sun is reflected onto the moon, whenever the Moon is orbiting the Earth, the sun is shining on different parts of the Moon. On Earth it looks as if the moon is changing shapes during its phases but that is incorrect. The position and angle the Sun is shining upon the moon makes only certain parts of the moon visible to our eye.

A Day in Beacon Park

Code313 hosted a Family Fun Day at Beacon Park over Father’s Day weekend. Attracting over 200 attendees, the event offered families an exciting opportunity to engage in STEM activities and bond with one another.

From constructing marshmallow catapults to creating DIY lava lamps, families were immersed in hands-on exploration, competitive games and the amazing food trucks. The interactive stations provided a space for parents and children to collaborate, communicate, and create lasting memories. They were able to create DIY lava lamps and have competitions with their event made marshmallow catapult's and balloon cars.

Code313's Family Fun Day at Beacon Park exemplified the power of STEM to bring families together and inspire the next generation of innovators and problem solvers.

S.T.E.M. Vs. S.T.E.A.M. : The Importance of Integrating Art into S.T.E.M. Education

Many people have noticed the slight addition to the S.T.E.M. world, yet this change has been made for the better and we’re here to talk about it! A space for creativity has walked in the room and made itself a home in S.T.E.M to bring forth S.T.E.A.M.!

A lot of people have been wondering what does the A stand for? The A stands for Art! Art is a form of individual uniqueness and is used to create. Many scholars are expressing themselves through various forms of art, which S.T.E.M. wants to be inclusive of this. Incorporating this, more scholars are able to empathize with S.T.E.M. subjects through S.T.E.A.M.

Educators are directly using artistic expression to support their lesson plans, which helps scholars think more critically about S.T.E.M. subjects than before. Adding art to S.T.E.M. widens the pathway for more scholars to get involved and interested in science, technology, engineering, art, and math. The benefits are many such as allowing scholars to put more of themselves into their work and allowing them to not feel a strong sense of right or wrong when problem-solving.

The intersection of sports and technology has never been more exciting, and the CODE313 x Detroit Pistons 2023 S.T.E.A.M. Slam is a perfect example of this fusion. CODE313 took over the Pistons Performance Center to host this innovative event that brings over 500 Metro-Detroit students together for a day of exploration, learning, and fun showcasing different activities involving Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.

“As a volunteer, I was really excited to see the different avenues for students to explore” volunteer Kayla Grandberry expressed.

With a diverse range of vendors in attendance, the S.T.E.A.M. Slam 2023 event offered students an array of exciting activities. They had the opportunity to create paper circuits, immerse themselves in an escape room experience using virtual reality, and witness a captivating showcase presented by Lawrence Tech University, among other engaging S.T.E.A.M events. S.T.E.A.M. Slam 2023 also featured numerous giveaways and prizes, including a remarkable raffle sponsored by Human-I-T, where 10 fortunate students won brand new Chromebooks. As technology increasingly permeates our daily lives, events like S.T.E.A.M. Slam 2023 play a vital role in fueling inspiration among the next generation of innovators.

Lava Lamps and How?

This week on Let's Talk About It Tuesdays , CODE313 is bringing knowledge and insight to our blog readers on the various topics of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math! This week's blog is centered around why and how a lava lamp works the way it does. So without further ado, let's talk about it.

We can best describe a lava lamp as a object that teaches us about density. Density is determined by whether something floats or sinks when it is in water. When something has less density than water, it will begin to float. When something has more density than water, it will begin to sink. Density is also affected by the temperature. This is the exact event happening inside of a lava lamp! The “something” inside of a lava lamp is a waxy compound and the temperature is manipulated from the light inside of the lamp.

Due to the wax being just as dense as the water, when you turn on the lava lamp, the heat (from the light at the bottom) makes the waxy compound slightly less dense than the water and the wax rises. When the wax rises to the top of the lamp (where it is cooler than the bottom) the wax has slightly more density than the water and it begins to sink. This cycle repeats to create the visually appealing lava lamp effect.

Engineering alum sees K-12 educators as the path to STEM diversity.

Keonte Alexander, CECH ’22, is accustomed to mentoring and caring for others. He’s a father and a science and math teacher at William Howard Taft Elementary School in Cincinnati Public Schools. He became interested in serving youth while earning his associate degree at Cincinnati State and working at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Cincinnati.

Balancing parenting, studying, work and student-teaching was challenging and expensive.

“Paying for my Ohio Assessment Educator (OAE) exams was a barrier because I’m a father, and I have to take care of my kids,” he shares. “It was hard to even get by with the most simple things. A $100 for those exams was a lot.”

Keonte Alexander serves to make a more diverse inclusive STEM workforce and instructing field through students of the minority and in urban schools.

History Maker- 13-year-old former STEM student headed to Medical School

"Mommy, I Made It"

Meet Alena Analeigh Wicker capturing the attention of University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine , Alena hopes to become a doctor. After already more than halfway done with her undergrad at Arizona State University and Oakwood University in just one year, Alena expects to reach her goal at 18.

Last year, she spoke with 12 News fresh on her acceptance to ASU's engineering program and shared her dreams of working with NASA . However, she soon realized she was interested in a different type of science .

"It actually took one class in engineering, for me to say this is kind of not where I wanted to go," she said. "I think viral immunology really came from my passion for volunteering and going out there engaging with the world."

The child genius felt inspired by a trip to Jordan and the Brown STEM Girl foundation , a program she founded at 12, that provides resources to exceptional minority students by form of scholarships and mentoring as they transition from college to career life.
